Learn About Passive Hydroponics Systems
A passive hydroponics system is simple and cheap to build and can be built and running in less than 30 minutes. These systems require no electricity and have no moving parts, which makes it ideal for gardeners with little time or patience for maintaining more complex systems. There are several different ways to build these simple systems. The Passive Wick Hydroponics System is constructed of two, 14 gallon Rubbermaid type containers placed atop one another. The top container is used as a growing bed containing a soilless mix like Sunshine # 4. Two nylon rope wicks are run from the bottom nutrient reservoir container through the root zone to keep the medium moist. The bottom container is used as a water reservoir to hold a weeks worth of nutrient solution.

A much simpler system to build is The Passive Soaker Hydroponics System. You may be surprised to find out just how easy it is to build your own hydroponics system. It consists of a single 14 gallon Rubbermaid container, with 6, one gallon containers used to hold the soilless growing medium and six plants. Each one gallon container holds one plant and is fed via capillary action from the bottom of the container. The 14 gallon Rubbermaid type container is filled up with 3-4 inches of nutrient solution. As the plants use the water, the reservoir is refilled as needed.

Another type of simple passive hydroponic system is the Passive Raft Hydroponics System which can be built from a simple 14 gallon Rubbermaid type container and uses a simple Styrofoam raft to float the plants above the aerated nutrient solution. Raft hydroponic systems are commonly used in large commercial hydroponic installations but can also be useful for the home hydroponics gardener.
