What is hydroponics? Why learn about hydroponics? How can a hydroponic garden help improve your life? Hydroponics is a method of growing your favorite herbs, fruits, and vegetables in an inert medium with the plants roots fed by a nutrient solution. Plants are fed through the water/nutrient solution rather than getting nutrition from the soil. In the 18th century, researchers like you and me discovered that plants absorb the nutrients they need to thrive from water rather than from soil. They found plants wouldn't die when grown in a water based mixture of essential elements. It was also discovered that just about any plant could be grown using the hydroponic method. Have you ever wanted to build your own hydroponics system but didn't know how?

There are many different types of hydroponics systems to choose from. However they fall into two classes -
passive and active hydroponic systems.
Passive hydroponic systems rely on a simple, non electric method of water distribution. These systems can be utilized in areas where electricity is unavailable and yet be just as productive. There are also virtually no maintenance issues with passive hydroponic systems because there are no moving parts. A common type of passive hydroponic system is the wick system which uses a wick to move the nutrient solution from the reservoir to the root zone in the
soilless
medium. These systems are super easy to build and great for indoor gardeners on the go because they require little maintenance or upkeep.

Passive hydroponic systems use a soilless medium to support the plants roots. Growing plants in a soilless medium such as perlite, vermiculite, and sand and hand watering with high quality hydroponic nutrients is one of the simplest ways to experience a hydroponic garden. In soilless systems, the seeds or clones are started directly into the soilless medium and grown in the same container from start to finish. Or they may be transplanted to larger soilless or even soil containers when the plants become root bound. While a soilless hydroponics garden may look just like its soil cousin, it has some distinct advantages that make it a popular choice for indoor gardening. Advantages of Soilless Hydroponics
- Inexpensive
- Lightweight
- Simple setup
- Sterile, Inert medium
- Retains moisture & drains easily
- Strong support for plants
- Can be reused for several harvests
- Available premixed in large bags ready to move indoors
- OR buy separate soilless components and make your own custom blend
Disadvantages of Soilless Hydroponics
- Dry, dusty particles
- Mixing your own soil is a messy job
- Wet soilless mixture in 5+ gallon containers makes moving large plants difficult
- Difficult to dispose of when its useful life is over
Psalm 104:14-21You God cause the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for people to use, to bring forth food from the earth, and wine to gladden the human heart, oil to make the face shine, and bread to strengthen the human heart.
